reply: Chico sent in his comments from his Android, so we'll forgive his spelling of 'supplements', but what is a 'nutritionalist'? I'd say it is someone who doesn't know jack about nutrition but he's read a few things on the Internet that make him think he's an expert who knows more than all the scientists in the world put together. If Chico really thought it was relevant to bring up business, return, customer base, etc., he'd know that there is a lot more to say....about the supplement industry. Despite the fact that numerous large studies have failed to find any benefit to taking daily vitamin and mineral supplements (and other supplements advertised by the industry as "helping" with all kinds of medical conditions from aching knees to impotence), business is booming.

One of the fastest growing industries in the world is the nutritional supplement group, or more broadly known as Vitamins, Minerals, and Supplements, or VMS. Producing about $32 billion in revenue for just nutritional supplements alone in 2012, it is projected to double that by topping $60 billion in 2021 according to the Nutritional Business Journal.*

I'd say the VMS business is very successful and it's all due to marketing and word of mouth from people who don't trust science and who probably rate an Academy Award as infinitely superior to a Nobel Prize.

Chico should face facts. He's a supplement pusher. That said, I repeat for those who don't read carefully that I do not maintain that "nutritional supplements are not effective." They are effective for people who have nutritional deficiencies. It is simply a boldfaced lie to claim that everybody has nutritional deficiencies and needs supplements to be healthy. It is also a fact that for some people supplements can be harmful to their health.
